Περίληψη:
Statistics is a mathematical field of great significance to all scientific disciplines. From the collection of observations and experimental data, to  their presentation, analysis and ultimately to drawing conclusions, it plays  a pivotal role both in research and in critical evaluation of facts.  In this talk we will come across some basic concepts and a few misconceptions which are necessary for any scientist in the making.

We will illustrate how easily Gaussian distribution emerges in data and warn about the implications when it doesn't (e.g. unrealistic promises-statements from politicians). We will see how we fitting a statistical model can save the day and the job of an experimentalist. Last but not least, we will apply a Machine Learning algorithm that allows astrophysicists to make new discoveries.
