The cool world of the Atacama Large Submillimetre/Millimetre Array (ALMA)

ALMA has revolutionised our view of the ‘cool’ universe from the star forming process, its relation to planet formation and astrochemistry, the role of the active galactic nuclei in shaping the morphology and physical processes in the interstellar medium of nearby and higher redshift galaxies to the physical mechanisms at play across a wide range of interstellar, circumgalactic and intergalactic medium conditions.

I will first show how ALMA works, the basic technique of submillimetre interferometry, and its novelty with respect to past facilities. I will then discuss some of the most ‘coolest’ scientific results of the past few years
