Abstract

Fundamental research is a concept that is not well understood because the underlying science is usually presented alone. Actually, most of the research comes from day life problems. During this talk, I will present how engineering problems lead to research requiring fundamental approaches. Two examples will be developed. The first one concerns the prediction of the thermal properties of nanostructures. The second one is about the influence of the electric field on the material properties. In both cases, atomic scale simulations might help understanding and discovering the physical phenomena. However, other complementary approaches are mandatory such as phonon modelling or mesoscopic model development.
