Introductory topics on renewable and conventional energy sources: energy resources, energy planning, energy management and storage.
Fuel technologies – heat pumps. Impacts of conventional energy sources on air quality and climate.
Solar energy: theoretical background on the propagation of solar radiation; spatial and temporal variability of solar radiation; measurement of solar radiation.
Assessment of the solar potential on horizontal, tilted and tracking (rotating) surfaces. Exercises.
Solar energy collection and conversion systems. Direct conversion to heat. Applications. Exercises.
Space heating. Concentrators. Conversion of solar radiation into other forms of energy. Exercises.
Wind energy: theoretical analysis (forces, power, efficiency, spatial and temporal variability of wind).
Wind turbines: ideal and real rotor. Exercises.
Power production from wind turbines. Estimation of wind speed with height. Exercises.
Assessment of the wind potential of an area. Statistical analysis of wind. Wind farms. Exercises.
Other renewable energy sources (geothermal, tides, waves, biomass).
Renewable energy in Greece: applications and prospects. Exercises from all modules.
