Τίτλος: Imaging the Invisible: The Event Horizon Telescope and the New Era of Black Hole & Jet Physics

Ομιλήτρια: Δρ. Θάλεια Τραϊανού, Heidelberg University

Περίληψη:

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) turned a century of theoretical predictions about black holes into direct observational reality. By linking radio telescopes across the globe through very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), the EHT achieved an angular resolution sharp enough to resolve the immediate surroundings of supermassive black holes, regions where gravity operates at its most extreme limits.

In this talk, we will explore how the EHT works, why imaging a black hole is fundamentally different from taking a conventional photograph, and how the collaboration transformed sparse interferometric data into the now-iconic images of M87* and Sgr A*. We will examine what these images reveal about spacetime curvature, photon rings, accretion flows, jet launching, and magnetic fields, as well as how they test GR in previously inaccessible regimes.

The talk will also highlight major developments since the first EHT images: multi-wavelength campaigns, polarimetric imaging, time-variable structure, jet base observations, and the coming “black hole movies”. Putting all together, EHT results open a new observational bridge between Einstein’s theory and Universe.
