Lattice Dynamics: Elastic waves in solids, monoatomic & biatomic chain, Normal vibration modes and phonons, Density of states, Specific heat.Band structure – Electrical properties: Free and semi-free electrons, electron effective mass, Bloch theorem, Metals, Conductivity, Energy density of states, Valence band and conductivity, diamond structure.Semiconductors: Carriers in intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, impurities, holes, carrier statistics, donors, acceptors, traps.Dielectric and Optical properties of solids: Polarization, Dielectric function, Ionic and electronic polarization, optical properties and Kramers-Kronig relations.
